IRIS Crimson Technical Highlights: ----------------------------------------- o NEW CPU Board - Uses R4000SC superpipelined CPU - 50 MHz external, 100MHz internal, clock rate - First-level cache is 8KB instruction + 8KB data - Second-level cache is 1MB instruction-and-data, 15nsec RAM - Memory-to-cache transfer rates of up to 400MB/sec - 16Mb base memory, expandable in 16MB and 64MB increments to a total of 256MB with ECC, SECDED - 1MB EPROM, 4 RS-232 ports, timer and LED register o NEW Graphics Subsystems (more info below) - fast (XS) - faster (XS24) - fastest (Elan) o Uses 64 MByte/second Crimson bus o Contains 2 full-height and 2 half-height 5-1/4" SCSI peripheral slots o Disk striping across two SCSI busses is a standard feature in all systems configured with two or more SCSI disks. Striped SCSI disks deliver a sustained data transfer rate in excess of 4MB/sec. o Fully upwardly binary compatible with all IRIS 4D products o Power: 1500 Watts. (excellent SPECMarks-per-watt) IRIS Crimson information from the glossy brochure: -------------------------------------------------- IRIS Crimson Features o Superpipelined R4000SC processor with a 50MHz external clock and 100MHz internal clock. o Choice of six high performance 3D graphics subsystems deliver performance and features to match any application. o Up to 256 MB memory, and internal disk capacity up to 3.6GB, expandable to greater than 48GB using additional enclosures. o High performance I/O subsystem includes four VME expansion slots, Ethernet, and two SCSI channels with disk striping support. IRIS Crimson Configurations IRIS Crimson/S CPU-only server configuration with no graphics; useful as a fast compute or file server. IRIS Crimson/Entry Entry graphics with eight bitplane subsystem in including software Z-buffer and hardware-assisted dithering to produce 24-bit color. Screen resolution is 1024x768. Ideal for applications requiring high X Window, 2D vector or 3D vector performance, Crimson Entry also provides full GL(tm) graphics capability at very low cost to compute-oriented applications. IRIS Crimson/XS Includes all Entry features, plus 1280x1024 screen resolution, optional hardware Z-buffer, and one Geometry Engine(tm) processor to increase polygon performance. Crimson XS offers low-cost solids modelling capability for compute-intensive applications. IRIS Crimson/XS24 Includes all XS features, plus 24 bitplane color. The Crimson/XS24 is well suited to compute intensive applications requiring full color imaging or solids modelling capability. IRIS Crimson/Elan Includes all XS24 features, plus standard hardware Z-buffer and four Geometry Engine processors to increase polygon performance. Crimson Elan delivers smooth screen motion of complex geometry, coupled with high compute performance. IRIS Crimson/VGX The Crimson/VGX delivers the fastest polygon performance available on any workstation, along with hardware-assisted anti-aliasing and texture mapping. The Crimson/VGX is the most powerful machine available for display of complex scenes and objects and is well-suited to applications requiring limited texture mapping. IRIS Crimson/VGXT Includes all VGX features, plus higher performance texture mapping. The Crimson/VGXT is a low-cost solution for compute intensive applications requiring complex texture mapping.
